The Good Guys Guide to Hoarding

We all have someone in our lives that just can’t seem to keep themselves from taking things they don’t need or will never use.

Here at Good Guys, we called that hoarding — and there  are ways to stop being such a pack rat. Check out these tips for getting rid of clutter around the home.

TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME

When you or a loved one start surveying the clutter that has piled up in and around the home, do not let yourself get overwhelmed. Set small goals, like clearing out a particular area. It doesn’t all have to be done at once. There’s no sense in running yourself ragged trying make it happen in one sitting.

HANDLE EACH ITEM ONLY ONCE

Often times, people say “Oh, I’ll get to that later”. Well, later doesn’t always come for some folks. So, when you or your loved one pick something up, decide then and there where it’s going — whether it’s in storage or out on the curb. If you’re having problems letting, call Good Guys. We’ll take it off your hands.

DIAL IT BACK A LITTLE

Maybe you don’t need that picture of surfing dogs that’s been sitting in your closet for a decade. Obviously, you want to keep the important stuff like heirlooms, family photos, and other valuables. But, dialing back on some of the more trivial items is a wise move.

USE IT OR LOSE IT

A good rule of thumb: If you haven’t used something in the last year, it might be time to toss it. We all buy things that we never end up using, so why hold onto it?

MAKE A QUICK BUCK

There are consignment shops, pawn shops, and other stores that would happy to buy some of your used items. It could definitely make it easier to part ways if you’re getting some greenbacks in return.

THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU TAKE SOMETHING

This gets down to the root cause of hoarding. Stop and take a moment to thoroughly consider the ramifications of taking something home. Will you ever use it? How long will it sit around before you pick it up again? Do you really have the space for it?

We hope these tips helped.
