The Purge: Deciding Which Items Need To Go

Are your belongings beginning to pile up around your house? Is it time to let go of some of those odd, rarely used items?

It’s not easy to let go of the objects you’ve accumulated over the years, but there is a way to determine which items should stay and which items should go.

Take the following approach to see if your belongings are worth keeping:

SEPARATE YOUR BELONGINGS INTO THREE PILES

Take some time to separate your belongings into three piles labeled “Keep”, “Toss”, and “Undecided”. Dividing your items will help you organize what needs to stay, what needs to go, and what needs further attention.

DETERMINE AN ITEM’S USEFULNESS

If an item no longer works or hasn’t been used for a while, consider tossing it. If you can’t find a purpose for the object, it’s probably time to find it a new home.

DETERMINE AN ITEM’S SENTIMENTAL VALUE

If an item isn’t useful in a traditional sense, you could be holding onto it because of its sentimental value. Objects from the past are great mementos, but not all of them are created equal. Determine whether or not the item has enough sentimental value to keep for the rest of your life. If the answer is “no”, find someone to take it off of your hands or throw it in the trash.

ASK A FRIEND FOR GUIDANCE

The decision to throw out some of your belongings can be really tough. So, why not get a trusted second opinion? See what your friend(s) think about some of the more difficult decisions. If neither of you can make a choice, consider giving your friend the item on a temporary basis.

THE TIME CAPSULE TEST

Are you still on the fence about some items? Try placing those belongings into a sealed box. Keep the box in one place for an entire year. If you can’t find a reason to open the box over the course of a year, then the items aren’t being used. So, without opening the box, throw the items away.
